What happens at the intersection of Big Mama Thornton and Lydia Mendoza? The late Poet Master Revolutionary Gil Scott-Heron said that there are at least 500 shades of the blues, so there must be the brown blues – after all, we have corridos and boleros to remind us we can’t be in love unless we’re miserable.
Chicanos Sing the Blues chronicles a fictitious Chicano blues man who finds himself at a crossroads. It is the story of urban music influenced by African American rhythmsand of amazing performers and cultural messiahs — An original play steeped in a blues tradition rich with the textures and rhythms of the Chicano experience: corridos, rancheras, heartbreaking huapangos, doo wop and Motown all find their way into the Chicano Blues Sound.
This Su Teatro production (the fourth original Su Teatro production this season) is a new collaboration between Tony Garcia and Daniel Valdez — the team who brought you El Sol Que Tu Eres and El Louie. Valdez brilliantly curates and directs a musical panorama that will move you and Garcia brings you the humor, satire and truth that you’ve come to expect from him. Don’t miss a truly memorable, exciting and satisfying theatrical experience.
The play runs for two weekends only – don’t miss out!
Sincerely,
Tanya Mote
Development Director
