Native American Actor, Activist Chaske Spencer to Headline American Indian Celebration April 28 at Minnesota State Mankato.
Mankato, Minn. – Actor and activist Chaske Spencer will headline a celebration of American India……n culture and identity Thursday, April 28, at Minnesota State Mankato.
The event, organized by the university’s American Indian Affairs office, is open to students, faculty, staff and the public, and will take place from 6-9 p.m. in Bresnan Arena of Taylor Center.
The celebration will feature the traveling art exhibit “Original Green,” as well as American Indian dancing and drumming.
Spencer, most recognized for his role as Sam Uley in “Twilight Saga: New Moon & Eclipse,” will discuss “Shifting the Power to the People” at 7:30 p.m. in Bresnan Arena.
He was born a Lakota Sioux and raised on reservations in Montana and Idaho. In addition to acting on stage and screen, he seeks to empower Native Americans to reduce poverty and create sustainable communities. He is a spokesperson for United Global Shift, a nonprofit organization that works to sustain Native American communities and reduce drug and alcohol addiction.
The “Original Green” exhibit focuses on sustainability and recently was featured at Mill City Museum, Minneapolis. It includes contemporary art from Minnesota State Mankato faculty member Gwen Westerman and Carolyn Lee Anderson, Gordon Coons and Bobby Wilson.
Tickets for Minnesota State Mankato students are $1, available at Morris Hall 265 or Centennial Student Union 243. Tickets for non-students are $6, available at both Mankato Cub Foods.
